California Governor Gavin Newson’s decision to commute the death sentences of all 500-odd prisoners on death row in California is good policy.
Aside from the fact that the death penalty is medieval barbarism, it does not deter crime.
Life sentences protect society just as effectively and have the added advantage of avoiding government murder, especially of innocents from among ethnic minorities and the mentally ill.
It is now time to lift the US into the modern era by eliminating the death sentence altogether.
