Gardens of Kyoto

In addition to 400 Shinto shrines and 1,600 Buddhist temples, Kyoto is home to hundreds of traditional Japanese gardens of which at least sixty are designated as National Sites of Natural Beauty. This makes Kyoto universally recognised as the number one city in the world in terms of density, quality, and historical preservation of traditional Japanese gardens.
It is in the art of garden design that the Japanese come closest to living up to their highest ideal of perfection. Japanese gardens are miniature, idealised representations of nature designed to bring about a sense of peace and harmony. They look exactly like the finest wild nature you could ever imagine, yet not a single tuft of moss or choice of bush or location of rock is left to chance. In their search for perfection, Japan's gardeners take on nature itself - and often win.
