British humour - it helps

Candidates await the results of the Makerfield by-election. The man in the centre wearing the dark suit and glasses is Andy Burnham, who will be Britain’s next prime minister.

But check out the rival candidates either side of him. Burnham had to beat both the fox and Count Binface en route to the big job!

Britain may have many problems, but lack of humour is not one of them.

All cultures have their highest vrtues. In the US, it is success. To the Japanese, it is perfection. In Scandinavia, we value equality and in Germany they admire doing one’s duty above all else.

The greatest virtue in British culture is resilience. Uniquely, this is a virtue, which only makes sense in a country full of problems. No wonder the British have developed such a fine sense of humour. They need it.
