I have been to quite a few Salvador Dalí museums and exhibitions around the world, but none of them come close to the Dalí Theatre & Museum in Figueres. This is probably the most interesting art museum I have ever visited.

The museum houses the largest collection of Dalí art anywhere in the world. It is also one of the most diverse collections comprising many of Dalí’s best paintings as well as a huge number sculptures, collages, mechanical devices, and other installations that defy categorisation. The museum also has works by other artists, including Antoni Pitxot's wonderful paintings of stones arranged to depict female nudes (the last picture below).

The Dalí Theatre & Museum was a conventional theatre until it burned down in the Spanish Civil War. In the late 1960s, Figueres city council and Dalí began the work to turn the ruin into a museum. Dalí wish was that his museum would:

“…be a single block, a labyrinth, a great surrealist object, a totally theatrical museum. The people who come to see it will leave with the sensation of having had a theatrical dream.”

His wish came true. Even the building is a great piece of art! Dalí is buried in a crypt beneath the old stage. But instead of me harping on, let my images from this magical place do the talking.
